Animal Care

Short Course

Students will get practical experience handling small animals, such as pigs, gerbils, hamsters and reptiles with their daily care needs. Part of the course is situated at an Equestrian Centre and gives young people the unique opportunity to work on the yard with horses and ponies. Students will also visit other animal centres such as zoos, working farms and farmers markets to gain more insight into the animal care industry.

Course Introduction

The Animal Care Short Course can accredit between 10 and 60 hours of learners’ activities and involvement in caring for all types of animals. This could range from looking after domestic pets at home, to working with farm animals and wildlife in the community, to finding out about more exotic species at zoos and wildlife centres.

The flexibility of ASDAN’s Short Courses means they can be carried out in a variety of settings, over a time period to suit the individual or co-ordinating centre. Challenge descriptions can be interpreted and adapted according to the situation.

This Short Course can be completed using the student book or is available for learners to complete online through the ASDAN e-portfolio system. Learners log in to complete challenges, record skills development and upload evidence. Tutors can view learner progress and sign off work, leaving feedback as needed.
